Main Article Content
Abstract
Property crime constitutes a significant challenge to public safety and socio-economic development. Crimes such as theft, burglary, robbery, vehicle theft, and criminal trespass adversely affect the quality of life and create a sense of insecurity among residents. Nagaon district, one of the most populous districts in Assam, has experienced rapid demographic growth, urban expansion, increased commercial activity, and enhanced transportation connectivity, which may influence the patterns and incidence of property crimes. The present study assesses the trends and spatial distribution of property crimes in Nagaon district and evaluates the effectiveness of existing crime prevention measures. The study is based on secondary data collected from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Assam Police records, government reports, and relevant scholarly literature. The findings indicate that socio-economic inequalities, unemployment, urbanization, migration, inadequate surveillance, and technological vulnerabilities contribute significantly to property crimes. This paper concludes with policy recommendation aimed at improving crime prevention efforts and reducing crime rates in Nagaon district, providing valuable insights for stakeholders involved in community safety and law enforcement.
