Abstract

Metabolic syndrome refers to group of conditions that co-exist and upsurges the risk of
cardiac disease, stroke as well as type 2 diabetes in the patient. In this syndrome, there is high
blood glucose level, increased blood pressure, excessive body fat accumulated around the
waist, and abnormal triglyceride or cholesterol levels. For metabolic syndrome, lifestyle
changes are important. Losing weight, working with a dietitian to alter diet, and getting more
exercise, quitting smoking and cutting back on the quantity of alcohol can also help. Weight
management is vital as by losing weight HDL which is considered as good cholesterol
increases whereas LDL which is regarded as bad cholesterol along with triglycerides is
decreased. By losing weight, the risk for type 2 diabetes can also reduce. Diet, behavioral
counseling, and exercise can decrease the risk factors more than diet alone. The present
review describes role of public health in prevention of metabolic syndrome.
