Hepatoprotective effects of purgative manna on the pyrrolizidine alkaloid of Senecio Vulgaris L. Extract hepatotoxicity in male rats; a biochemical and pathological experiment

Resumen

Back grand and aims: Pyrrolizidine alkaloidosis is a disease caused by poisoning in humans
or animals through the consumption of plants containing toxic chemical compounds known as
pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Methods : In this animal experiment, hepatotoxicity was
induced in rats with the administration of Senecio vulgarisL. extract at concentration of 500
mg/kg (b.w by gavage) once daily for 7 consecutive days. Rats were then post-treated with
100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg Cotoneaster nummularioides manna orally for 14 days. Result: For
this purpose, the liver enzyme activity and the serum concentrations of total protein, albumin,
and bilirubin as the main indicators were also measured. The animals were then euthanized,
and their livers were immediately harvested, and histopathological examinations of liver tissues
were performed. The oral intake of Senecio vulgaris extract increased the bilirubin, alkaline
phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST) in
comparison to the control group. However, post-treatment with purgative manna significantly
inhibited the abnormality of serum toxicity enzyme activities. In addition, histopathological
studies showed that Senecio vulgaris induced severe injury to the liver. Conclusion: However,
the purgative manna effectively protected animals against hepatoxicity induced by Senecio
vulgaris in a dose-dependent manner. The ANOVA test was utilized to analyze the data.
