Abstract

Aim & Objectives of the Study A Study on effect of Mastoid drilling on O toacoustic emissions in Mastoidectomy Patients. Study design: Prospective, Observational study. Study Period: May 2019 to January 2021.Study place: Department of Otorhinolaryngology in a Private Medical College in Chengalpattu District. Study sample/subjects: Patients diagnosed with Mastoiditis not curable with medical treatment & who will give consent for study. Results: The final analysis included 123 patients who underwent mastoidectomy surgery. 52 were female & 71 were male patients. The age and sex distribution were not found to be statistically significant. In all patients, a OAE from the contralateral ear was obtained preoperatively. No changes on OAE were seen in patients on 1st and 7th day post operatively in the contralateral ear. This difference was not statistically significant according to the Tukey Post Hoc test. Conclusion: Chronic otitis media poses a major health problem leading to social handicap in terms of hearing loss. Various types of surgeries like mastoidectomy are used to help the patient to get rid of the disease and its sequelae. With this study we are able to confirm that no harm like Noise induced hearing loss was done to the contralateral ear because of surgeries like mastoidectomy in the diseased ear.
